BAYELSA GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION
The election of Duoye Diri as the governor of Bayelsa state has been upheld by the Bayelsa governorship election tribunal sitting in the FCT, Abuja.
The verdict was given on Saturday, August 15, by a three-man panel who constituted the electoral panel, Channels TV reports. Owei Woniwei of the Alliance for Democracy had dragged the governor to the tribunal in a petition where he claimed that Diri did not win the election held in 2019.
notes that the judgement came barely a month after an appeal filed by Timi Alaibe challenging the candidacy of Diri as the PDP flagbearer was dismissed by the Supreme Court. Further delivering the judgement, the tribunal panel said it could not ascertain allegation of forgery of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate and declaration of age levelled against Diri’s deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
The Bayelsa tribunal ruling came barely three months after the Kogi governorship election tribunal upheld the election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Yahaya Bello. The tribunal in a ruling on Saturday, May 23, in Abuja dismissed the case filed by Musa Wada of the PDP.
